After many months of browsing the internet, bidding on e bay auctions and calling numbers that no one answered, I have finally managed to buy the perfect truck. The Adventure Truck is born and is finally in my possession (we are all in the UK for the summer holidays seeing family after 2 long long years away!) but what have I bought, have I got a clanger, or have the blind buying Gods been kind to me…
I have decided to go for a TD5 110 as the basis of my choice, but with some key factors that made the hunt quite difficult. I wanted a crew cab body (a pickup truck style), I wanted the 2002-2006 TD5 which I think has a slightly improved dashboard. I had been searching high and low for an unmodified vehicle in County spec (Had a better centre dash and electric windows). What I really wanted was to find a Defender from a dealer who was willing to sell one cheap and then do a bit of work to bring the old girl up to standard.
Here is my truck.
She’s a 2004 TD5 County spec ex shoot truck from the Yorkshire Dales, single owner with an incomplete service history, a solid chassis and a clean bulkhead. Basically the perfect base for building something superbly fun. I found it from a well respected dealer called Penine Autos who also agreed to do some light touch up work before shipping the defender south to meet me as we escape Quarantine this summer.
Here are the original unfettered pictures of this magnificent machine, full of rust, beaten up, smelly, old and looking for a new home. She is going to be going through some light cosmetic work to make her blend into her Southern Home Counties softer, calmer life mainly at the hand of yours truly while we finally enjoy being home! Who knows what is coming next, but keep an eye on Instagram for all the excitement and break downs to unfold over the coming weeks.
The eagle eyed amongst you will notice that the old girl has already undergone some minor fettering including new doors and new steel wheels as well as removing the back cover and tidying up some small less visible areas.
So excited for you! I think “Gertie” is a great name for her! We will share all of our tried and tested Land Rover Defender modifications / upgrades / tweaks with you as you continue on this journey! Welcome to the gang! Go Beyond! Ax
She is absolutely gorgeous, TLO! Seems like quite the adventure! Ship her back to Qatar after the summer and bring her on our Sealine adventures!! 😉 Big hug from our little island off of the coast of Florida, J&J xx
Good decision re the wheels, give some thought to changing the steering wheel too.
